NOSTALGIA: Baja Poncho
Feels like only yesterday that I was wearing one of these ponchos while playing hacky-sack and smoking “funny cigarettes” in my high school courtyard. Ah, those were the days. Cutting class and redefining existence while listening to CCR and Bob.
But nothing says Baja poncho better than Jeff Spicoli (aka a young Sean Penn) in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The incessantly wasted surf bum, complete with poncho, can’t think of anything better in life than “some tasty waves, a cool buzz”, as he drives Mr. Hand, his type A history teacher, to drink.
But if these Mexicano woven pull-overs weren’t reason enough to bring a smile to my face–or a longing to be 15 again–seeing them on the runway makes me all fuzzy inside (cough cough, or is it that a funny cigarette?). Almost thirty years later, Proenza Schouler and Celine are bringing ponchos back so that we can all remake history!
Get one while you can, because as Spicoli would say, they’re “awesome! Totally awesome!”
